A rewarding day for Clean4Shore co-ordinator
It was a rewarding day for Clean4Shore co-ordinator Mr Graham Johnston when Umina campus support unit students joined him for a clean-up of Pelican Island and the Woy Woy Channel last week.
"Watching support unit students overcome challenges and work as a team to remove some difficult items is overwhelming," he said.
"It is even better when the supervising teachers allow the students to meet these challenges and the smiles of satisfaction on completion of the task."
Mr Johnston said that "Which way, Jono?" was an early call when walking through thick mangroves on Pelican Island.
Then "follow me" and "over here" from the students as rubbish was found and the team loaded it onto the barge.
"Plenty of soft and hard plastics, oyster product, marine ply, pallets and some hard plastic were retrieved from the retaining wall adjacent to the Woy Woy Channel salt water pool.
"The students only walked the Channel, filling the barge with 15 full bags of small litter plus the larger items.
"A shopping trolley and office chair wer removed from the drain along the broadwalk."
He said there was support from local kayakers and fishermen upon arrival back at Lions Park, with the hungry students enjoying a healthy lunch.
The 280 kg of rubbish collected on the day was offloaded at Woy Woy Tip
