School for Seniors faces closure without new committee
The Peninsula School for Seniors will be forced to close on 6 December 6, unless it can find volunteers to help on the committee.
Ms Diana Johnston said she, Ms Denise Simpson, Ms Dee Chrystal and secretary Ms Oriel Williams has served as the committee but wanted to attract fresh ideas.
The group, which has operated since 1989, hosted individuals and organisations from across the Coast community to educate the group on a wide range of subjects, she said.
It meets on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the school term.
On special occasions, the group welcomes children from the childcare centre to perform for them.
Prior to the pandemic, there were 130 School for Seniors members. Now there are 57.
The School also organised bus day trips for the members to have lunch together or to see a show.
Every Wednesday there is a craft morning.
The committee seeks out speakers, manages the meetings and the bookkeeping.
Ms Johnston said the School "provides somewhere safe and friendly to come if you are living on your own".
"It's like family almost."

Membership is $5 a year, plus $5 at each meeting to cover the cost of Council hire charges.
