Prepare an emergency kit, brigade urges
The collapse of the Optus Mobile Network last week has prompted the Pearl Beach fire brigade to encourage people to prepare an emergency kit.
"This morning is a good prompt to ensure that your emergency kit (which can be used during bushfires, storms, or other major events) contains a battery powered radio," the brigade posted.
"This morning we're lucky that only one of the three main carriers is down, and that NBN services are unaffected.
"In a major emergency, we may lose all phone and internet services.
"What do we do when the mobile phones stop working?
"A radio may be the only way to keep updated on what is happening.
The NSW Rural Fire Service has a webpage with suggestions for what might go into an emergency kit.
