Outrigger club attends first regatta for season

The Central Coast Outrigger Canoe Club attended its first regatta of the 2023/24 marathon season at La Perouse on Sunday, September 17.

The club's newest canoe, Whaitere, made its racing debut.

"Whaitere is an ultralight canoe and at 73kg is just over half the weight of a standard canoe which makes handling the canoe both on and off the water easier and safer for club members," said club president Ms Jenny Norris.

Whaitere was partly funded by a State Govt grant received by the club in late 2022.

Of 20 club members in four crews, six were novices who were also making their racing debut.

Club coach Ms Lana Hofman said: "It was a successful regatta for Central Coast Outriggers, and, after combining several categories, three out of the four crews received medals.

"The final crew missed out on a medal by only nine seconds."
