Varroa mite eradication efforts abandoned

Efforts to eradicate the varroa mite have been abandoned, with a decision to manage the pest instead.

The decision came just two weeks after the detection of a varroa mite at Blackwall.

Transition to management of the varroa mite will be led by NSW Department of Primary Industry "in consultation with key stakeholders", according to a social media post.

"The National Management Group (made up of all states, the Commonwealth and 16 industry partners) has now decided that eradication is no longer technically feasible.

"The group unanimously decided to move from an eradication program to a management approach."

Further information is available on the emergency response website www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/varroa.
