Barmah Forest virus found at Empire Bay

The mosquito-borne Barmah Forest virus has been detected at Empire Bay.

Central Coast Health is encouraging residents to protect themselves against mosquitoes.

"While not all infected people experience symptoms, those who do could experience fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, joint swelling, stiffness and pain, rash usually on torso or arms, tiredness or weakness.

"The best way to avoid infection is to cover up, use insect repellent and reapply regularly, ensure windows and doors have screens, avoid spending time outdoors at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active and remove any water-holding containers outside the house where mosquitoes could breed."
